Design Mission Station / Digital Media Museum
Mission Station connects the Los Angeles Metro to South Pasadena, CA. The site occupies a visible corner neighboring markets, a small park, and a historic building. Pushing the museum below the ground gives its grass covered roof back to the park. Connecting the street level sidewalk to the museum below creates a courtyard adjacent to the museum and café. Tilting the roof of the museum up to let in light and let people see in, protects the station platform against sun and rain.
Entering on the right, the first gallery is a bridge elevated within the room, separating the visitor from the walls and floor while directing movement. The second gallery is a translucent tunnel that allows the visitors to walk in and become the installation. The third and final gallery is a large room with a glass floor removing the reassuring ground from beneath the feet and creating more possibilities. |
